Jemisin is one of the most celebrated science fiction and fantasy writers of our time, and The City We Became is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that explores themes of identity, community, and the power of hope.
The novel begins with a mysterious event that causes New York City to become sentient. At first, the city is confused and disoriented, but it soon begins to learn and grow. It experiences the joys and sorrows of its inhabitants, and it develops a deep love for them.
But the city is also vulnerable. It is constantly under threat from outside forces, both human and supernatural. And when a powerful entity known as the Enemy threatens to destroy the city, it's up to five ordinary New Yorkers to save it.
These five New Yorkers are from different walks of life, but they are all united by their love for the city. There's Anya, a young woman who is struggling to find her place in the world; Isaiah, a homeless man who has seen the worst that the city has to offer; Padmini, a doctor who is dedicated to helping others; Sam, a police officer who is trying to protect the city from harm; and Cris, a drag queen who is full of life and laughter.
Together, these five New Yorkers must learn to work together to save the city they love. They must overcome their differences and find a way to channel the power of the city's avatar. And they must do it all before it's too late.
The City We Became is a must-read for fans of speculative fiction, urban fantasy, and anyone who loves a good story about the power of community. Jemisin has created a fascinating and thought-provoking novel that explores the nature of identity, the importance of community, and the power of hope.
